CAI Alumnus Wins Olympic GOLD!

We are very proud to announce that Jon Montgomery, CAI Alumnus who graduated in 2000, has won Olympic Gold! This is his first medal in his first Olympic Games. Jon is a two-time Canadian National title holder for skeleton racing. Last year he ranked second in the world. Jon was born in Russell, Manitoba and is currently residing in Calgary. He is a sales consultant and an automotive auctioneer.Congratulations Jon from CAI at Georgian College! National Automotive Fleet Association Conference

June Martin and Jennifer Sheremeto attended the NAFA (National Automotive Fleet Association) Conference on September 21, held at the Doubletree Plaza Hotel in Toronto.

This was a great opportunity to network with the fleet operations side of the automotive industry and spread the word about CAI.

Mosport International Raceway visit

Our event took place from April 13th to April 23rd at Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville Ontario. This was a sales event to help generate future prospects into current Porsche owners. This show generated 400 participants that were flown in from across the country to the Metropolitan SoHo Hotel downtown Toronto. The guests were shuttle to the track every morning by a Prevost Coach bus. We had a different group every day from each of the 12 Porsche centres across Canada. Various stations were set up at the track which involved a handling course, braking section, slalom, off-road and a product knowledge exclusive presentation. The day ran from 9 a.m to 5 .pm daily.

I, (the co-op student: Kurtis Cournoyer) was in charge of the overall assistance of the event.

I also looked after pre-event marketing strategies
Assisted with the Event and Location
Proper prospects chosen
Ensuring the stations were set-up correctly
Ensuring that the cars were detailed properly and parked and cones were placed
I also ensured the cars were fueled.

I looked after some of the minor details too like good music in tent, warming tires and brakes on track and providing shop assistance (replace parts) etc.

GM gives exciting opportunity to CAI students

This past February, CAi students were invited for a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to visit General Motors. The students experienced a 3D Virtual Reality design and saw how many quality assurance tests are done.

The students also had the opportunity to meet with Robert A. Lutz. Bob has been Senior Advisor of General Motors Corporation since April 1st, 2009 and serves as its Acting Chief Executive Officer of GM Europe. He was extremely open and honest with the students and taught them valuable lessons that they can carry into their career.

This 2 day class trip was organized by CAI Professor David Aves and proved to be a once in a lifetime opportunity for CAI students.

Kevin Law, CAI student, writes about his experiences during the two day visit:

The first day we visited the GM Heritage Center. Vehicles include anything from prototypes to current vehicles on the road. The best thing was that I found the EV1, which is shown above.It and was the greatest thing of my life! There were a bunch of vehicles around as well that are dated back to 1950s such as trucks and first generation luxury vehicles.

On the second day at GM place, we visited the VR (Virtual Reality) center where we could virtually touch any part of the vehicle and see how it feels to design the look or the tint of the vehicle in 3D. This was a breath taking experience for me because I
had no idea technology could be this high-tech.

When we finally met with Bob Lutz, I was extremely nervous because I have never met anyone in his position before and I was honored to have met him. Bob is a very nice and down to earth person and provided me with a gift to go home with.

All together this was the greatest experience of my education, not only being able to meet Bob, but seeing how tests were done on vehicles before they are being produced.

It gives me a new idea on what I would like to do after I complete my education.

CAI attends Women of Influence luncheon series held at the Royal York Hotel

CAI staff and students met with Maureen Kempston-Darkes who is the highest ranking woman at General Motors. We were invited to a very special luncheon that 4 CAI staff and 6 CAI students attended.

CAI staff and students had the pleasure of meeting Maureen after the luncheon and become more inspired by her enthusiasm and joy for the industry.

Maureen told the female CAI students of CAI that now is the best time ever to be in this ever changing industry.

She said to the students that the best is yet to come. It was reassuring for the students to hear this from such a powerful yet down to earth female role model in the auto industry.

Maureen Kempston-Darkes has been associated with General Motors since 1975. She was President and General Manager of GM Canada and Vice President of General Motors from 1994 to 2001. She was named Group Vice President and President, GMLAAM effective January 1, 2002.

CAI Students visit GM - Milford Proving Ground & OnStar Headquarters!
Six CAI students spent Wed.Nov.19 at GM Head Office with CAI faculty David Aves. The students went to the Milford Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan and did a few tests around the track on all kinds of road conditions. Then they ventured to downtown Detroit, Michigan to visit the OnStar headquarters and to meet with Brian McVeigh (General Manager of General Motors). Students not only had the opportunity to meet with the executives from General Motors, but they had the chance to discuss how they improved on the cars and shared the steps they took get to where they are in their careers. Kevin Law, a CAI students said “This was a great networking experience for me, and it has opened future paths to work with General Motors business partners.” Please see pictures below under Recent Photos.

AJAC Testfest
CAI students worked at the AJAC Testfest in Niagra Fall from Oct. 20-24. This event was a great chance for students to mingle with auto journalists and various automotive industry representatives. Please see pictures below under Recent Photos.

AIA Conference
The annual AIA Conference took place on Nov.13 in Barrie at the Kempenfelt Conference Centre. Staff and students from CAI will have the opportunity to network with the aftermarket industry leaders. Please see pictures below under Recent Photos.

CAI & Compass360RaceTeam
This year 2 CAI students had the opportunity to go on the road with Compass360 Race Team traveling across the US and Canada. They will be attending the SEMA event in Las Vegas in November. Visit the Compass360 website. Please see pictures below under Recent Photos.

Forumula101 Racing
Formula101 visited Barrie to provide the 2008 Auto show committee with a chance of a life time! To race a formula1 car at the Barrie Molson Center parking lot. To view pictures of this event see below under Recent Photos.

Montreal Career Fair
CAI attended as an exhibitor the Montreal Education Fair. This four day even took place from Oct.15-18 at Place Bonaventure in Montreal.

Georgian Auto Show 2009
Although the 2008 auto show has come to a close, it is only the beginning for the 2009 auto show committee to start working. A new student committee will be selected in November and start working on the 2009 show!

Awards and Scholarships
The Canadian Automotive Institute Awards and Scholarship ceremony took place Auto Show weekend on Sat. Sept.20.
55 awards were given out to 90 deserving CAI students. The total value of scholarships awarded from the automotive industry to CAI students was $121,000. The Canadian Automotive Institute would like to thank our generous automotive supporters who help make our students dreams a reality!

CAI at IMPORTFEST 2008!

CAI staff and alumni attended IMPORTFEST at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Sat. Sept.6, 2008.
This event is the largest Sport Compact Car event in Canada. CAI was thrilled to be a part of it.
