First time online student
If you are a first time student it is important you read this page.
These part-time courses are currently being offered on-line using top-quality industry experts and instructors.
The “virtual” classroom may be your home or office and the classroom hours are yours to choose. The secret to success is time management. Although you do not have defined hours of class each week, make sure to set aside time each week to complete this learning. While there is no interactive assignment, you will have a “by”date for work to be completed. An assignment or test may open on Monday morning at 8:00 AM and you will have until Friday at midnight to complete the task. Instructions for each assignment and work operation will be clearly explained by the instructor prior to the assigned completion date.
Your course web site is presented in printable lessons. There are links in the online course to relevant web sites that also contain printable pages. By printing and organizing content that you think is important, you build a valuable study resource.
Blackboard is the system in which the course is located. It is important that you are able to login and find your way around the system before the course begins.
Check out this page with tipsheets on how to use “Blackboard”, prior to starting your course.
Tests
Many On-line courses have mid-term(s) and a final exam which are to be completed in a classroom. Tests must be written in person in a proctored environment which has been pre-approved by the instructor.
Those that are unable to travel to the Barrie campus during the scheduled test times must contact the instructor within the first two weeks of the beginning of the course to make appropriate arrangements.
Generally, it is suggested that if you reside within a 150 kilometer radius of Barrie that you come to Georgian College. If that is not practicable, you can arrange an alternate “approved” test site.
Where an alternate test site is approved for you to write tests off-campus, it is your responsibility to arrange a proctored test site with an approved institution. A local school or community college would typically be considered an “approved institution”. Normally students are required to show two pieces of identification, including one piece of Photo ID prior to writing the exam.
See “Proctored Form” for more details on exams completed at another location.
